ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DRIVEWAY COBBLES
Discover our selection of natural stone permeable cobbles, ideal for landscaping your driveways, patios, and gardens. Our range includes robust products in sandstone, granite, travertine, or Kandla, available in stock with various aged, split, or multicolored finishes. Suitable for vehicle traffic due to their thickness and resistance, these cobbles offer an excellent balance between aesthetics and durability. We provide support with advice on installation, material selection, maintenance, and delivery. Also, take advantage of our offers and personalized quotes to successfully complete your permeable outdoor paving project.
For a driveable surface, not all outdoor pavers are suitable. It is essential to choose natural stone pavers that are sufficiently resistant to vehicle traffic. Driveable pavers must be at least 6 cm thick, or more depending on the traffic intensity. Products in granite, Kandla sandstone, porphyry, or cleft gneiss are recommended for their strength.
At Minéral, we offer driveable pavers in stock, available in several sizes, colors (beige, multicolor, gray, black) and finishes (aged, cleft, bush-hammered). These outdoor products are perfect for landscaping a courtyard, a garden, or a driveable terrace.
Our thick slabs, blocks, or interlocking natural stone pavers suit all types of paving.
The installation of drivable pavers differs from that of standard pavers. You must ensure a stable and durable surface, capable of withstanding the passage of vehicles. Here is our technical advice:
- Excavate the ground to a depth of 30 to 40 cm depending on the bearing capacity of the soil.
- Install a foundation layer of compacted hardcore.
- Add a stabilized sand bed or use a bedding mortar to fix the pavers.
- Lay the stone pavers respecting the dimensions, the pattern, and appropriate jointing (mortar or polymeric sand).
- Compact the surface and water it to stabilize.
The drivable pavers must be laid flat, with no gaps, with solid edging to maintain the structure. This method ensures good waterproofing, limits the stagnation of water and prevents the surface from sinking. See our guide to choosing pavers.
The paver thickness is an essential criterion for ensuring a driveable outdoor surface. To withstand the weight of a light vehicle, a stone paver must be at least 6 cm thick. For regular vehicle traffic or trucks, opt for pavers of 8 to 10 cm, or even more depending on the nature of the ground and the type of installation (mortar-bedded installation or on a compacted sand bed).
The granite pavers, sandstone or limestone offered by Minéral are specially selected for their mechanical characteristics.
All our vehicle-rated products are tested for their compressive strength, their long-term durability, and their stability.
Check each product page to verify the thickness, the type of stone, the size and the finish suited to your project.
The price of driveable pavers varies depending on several criteria:
- The type of stone: granite, Kandla sandstone, travertine, limestone…
- The finish: aged (tumbled), cleft, bush-hammered, natural…
- The dimensions: large or small formats
- The thickness: the thicker a paver is, the more its price increases
- The available stock and the promotional offers currently running
At Minéral, the price of our driveable pavers starts at around €32.50 / m² for Kandla sandstone, and can reach €175 / m² for premium Belgian bluestone.
All our products are available for delivery or in-store pickup, with a personalized quotation.
Please check our website regularly to discover products in stock, new references, and our outdoor landscaping tips.
For a vehicle-accessible terrace or an easy-to-maintain path, we recommend choosing:
- cleft pavers or aged (hide dirt better)
- natural stone pavers with water-repellent treatment or anti-stain treatment
- Paving with narrow grout joints or sealed (prevents weeds)
Avoid stones that are too light-colored if the area is exposed to oil or tire marks. Granite pavers, Kandla sandstone, or porphyry are particularly resistant to stains and impacts. Our products are compatible with maintenance accessories available in store.
A good maintenance routine consists of:
- Sweeping regularly the surface
- Cleaning with clear water or with a mild product
- Avoiding harsh chemical products
- Refilling the joints if needed with polymeric sand
No. At Minéral, we do not recommend reconstituted stone for vehicular use. Even if some manufacturers indicate a certain resistance, it remains lower than that of natural stone. The durability, the aesthetic appearance,
and the long-term performance are significantly better with natural granite, sandstone, or travertine pavers.
The reconstituted stone may be suitable for pedestrian areas (terrace, garden path), but for a vehicular area, we exclusively recommend our natural stone products, with an aged (tumbled) or cleft finish.
