TRAVERTINE: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR YOUR NATURAL STONE BATHROOM
Travertine is ideal for a bathroom: natural, aesthetic, non-slip, and durable. Discover our tips for optimal use in your wet room.
Travertine is an excellent choice for a bathroom. This natural stone,
highly prized for its beige shades and aged appearance, is perfect for creating a warm and authentic atmosphere. Travertine adapts to all types of bathrooms, whether they are designer, modern or rustic. As wall tiles or as floor covering, it brings a highly sought-after natural effect.
Its use is suitable both in a shower and in opus pattern on walls or floors. The rectangular format is often chosen for a more contemporary look. With good availability in stock and a reasonable price, travertine stands out
as one of the favourites for a durable and attractive bathroom.
Travertine offers many advantages for a bathroom. First of all, it is a natural stone that allows a wide variety of formats, dimensions
and shades. Travertine tiles come in several finishes: honed, aged, rough, to suit every room. Travertine tiling, used on floors or walls, gives a timeless and authentic style. It blends easily with materials such as wood or marble.
Its natural effect adds character to the bathroom, and its beige tones or grey
silver shades allow easy harmonisation with other decor elements. In opus or rectangular format, it makes it possible to create interesting graphic effects. Travertine is therefore a favourite for interiors, particularly in baths and showers. Its price remains attractive compared with other natural stones.
Travertine is a noble natural stone, prized for its timeless elegance. But like any authentic material, it has certain technical constraints you should know about to ensure a lasting installation with no unpleasant surprises.
At Minéral, we have been working with travertine for several generations, on residential and hotel projects. Here are the real points to watch that we share with our customers:
- Sensitivity to acids: Travertine, being a limestone, it reacts to acidic products (descalers, lemon, vinegar...). Without treatment, this can lead to irreversible stains.
👉 That is why we systematically recommend pore filling followed by a professional water- and oil-repellent treatment, which we apply on our own job sites.
- Regular maintenance required: Gentle cleaning (such as black soap or Lithofin Wash & Clean), monitoring of the grout joints and re-treatment every 3 to 5 years are essential to preserve the natural radiance of the stone.
- Formats suited to the room: In small bathrooms, tiles that are too large can visually overwhelm the space. Our installer customers often recommend intermediate formats or opus mix to balance volumes and aesthetics.
- Choice of finish is crucial: In a shower tray, prefer a sandblasted or textured finish to avoid slipping. Some aged finishes, although very decorative, may have irregularities that require an experienced installer in the laying of natural stone.
- Natural variability: Travertine is a living stone. Color shades and textures vary from one batch to another.
👉 It is therefore recommended to order 10 to 15% extra surface area to ensure a harmonious mix when laying, as all experienced craftsmen do.
Travertine is a noble natural stone, but its maintenance is nothing complicated — as long as you know the right techniques.
At Minéral, we have been installing and maintaining travertine for decades in private bathroom and hotel projects. Here are our recommendations from the field:
- Gentle cleaning: Absolutely avoid acidic products (vinegar, standard limescale remover…) which attack limestone. Prefer a cleaner specially made for natural stone such as Lithofin Wash & Clean: it contains a water-repellent base that prolongs protection while nourishing the surface. Far better than black soap, it maintains the stone's natural patina while creating a thin protective film with each use.
- Recommended water repellent: We recommend treating the stone with a water- and oil-repellent as soon as it is laid (e.g. Lithofin Fleckstop W). This prevents water, soap or limescale from penetrating the stone. In highly exposed areas such as the shower, this treatment can be renewed every 3 to 5 years depending on use.
- Filling surface irregularities: Travertine naturally has cavities. For floor or shower use, filling these holes with joint mortar makes cleaning much easier. For a decorative wall installation, you can on the contrary leave them visible to reinforce the natural style.
- Drying wet areas: As with any covering, remember to dry walls and floors after a shower to limit limescale marks.
- Visual tips: Opt for beige or silver shades with slight variations, which better camouflage small stains or marks caused by everyday humidity.
Unlike synthetic materials, travertine develops a natural patina. Some superficial stains disappear on their own with use, others blend into the living look of the stone. It is this organic authenticity that gives all its charm to travertine: it ages, evolves and improves like a living material.
Nothing alarming. Like all covering materials, a wet natural stone simply appears darker due to moisture — this is a normal physical and temporary reaction. Once dry, the stone returns to its original colour.
At Minéral, we have been laying travertine in bathrooms for years, including in hotels or professional spas. Even unfilled, travertine copes perfectly with moisture. It is a dense, not very porous stone, with a very low absorption rate (often < 3%), well below many French limestones used indoors.
💡 The famous little holes in travertine are not a defect but an aesthetic feature: they indicate neither fragility, nor high porosity, contrary to a common misconception.
A water-repellent treatment is recommended, not to “protect the stone against water”, but to limit surface deposits (limescale, soap, etc.) and make maintenance easier. For example, a product like Lithofin Wash & Clean, used routinely, leaves a thin water-repellent film that extends the protective effect over time, while nourishing the stone.
The travertine remains an excellent choice for dressing a bathroom with character, but it is not the only option. Other natural stones, such as marble, offer a more luxurious and veined look. However, they sometimes have a more slippery surface, particularly in a polished finish.
At Minéral, with our experience on hundreds of residential and hotel projects, we systematically recommend:
- A honed or aged (matte) finish in wet areas, easier to maintain day to day (no greasy reflections or visible marks);
- and for sensitive areas such as shower trays, a sandblasted finish, naturally non-slip, which guarantees safety and comfort in use with no aesthetic compromise. This is the finish we offer when we make made-to-measure shower trays.
👉 These recommendations are the ones we apply ourselves on our own sites, with products tested in real conditions. Our ranges are available in several technical finishes, ready to install, to guarantee an attractive installation that is durable over time.
If you are looking for other styles:
- The marble remains a safe bet for those looking for a more luxurious, veined and refined style. It is perfectly suited to a bathroom, provided you choose the right finish (preferably honed rather than polished) and maintain it with specific products.
- The zellige-effect tiling is an interesting option for recovering a natural style without specific maintenance.
- The natural-stone-effect tiles also bring warmth and design to the room. Wall tiling or floor tiling with a concrete effect gives a more industrial look. The choice of format, finish and colour should be made according to use (floor, walls, shower).
