ALL ABOUT BLUE STONES FOR PATIOS
Discover our range of natural blue stone, a durable and elegant grey-blue limestone, ideal for patios, pool surrounds and paving. Belgian, Vietnamese or Chinese stone, in slabs, cobbles or coping, with different finishes and formats. Available in stock with fast delivery. Easy to maintain and durable, it guarantees a non-slip and aesthetic surface.
The natural blue stone is a compact limestone, resistant and elegant, recognizable by its shades of blue-grey and its fossils visible to the naked eye. Originating from Belgium, Vietnam, China, Turkey or Ireland, it is highly sought after for terraces, paths, pool surrounds, or even indoor tiles.
At Minéral, we carefully select our natural blue stones from partners known for their quality. Our blue stone range includes:
- the Belgian blue stone from Hainaut,
- the Blue Stone from China,
• and the Ocean Blue from Vietnam or Turkey.
These blue limestones are ideal for building an outdoor terrace, a stone floor, or even pool copings. Thanks to their durability, low porosity and numerous finishes, they offer a non-slip and weather-resistant surface, even in cold regions.
Available in stock and in different formats of slabs or pavers. These products suit all styles: modern, rustic, or contemporary.
Minéral Pierre Naturelle offers you a wide range of slabs, pavers, steps, pool copings and tiles, available in stock with fast delivery.
The maintenance of a blue stone terrace is simple but essential to preserve its natural appearance, its blue-gray color, and its durability against bad weather. This limestone material is known for its resistance, but good maintenance extends the beauty of the natural stone surface, whether it is slabs, pavers, or blue stone tiles.
Here is our advice for effective maintenance:
- Routine cleaning: use a mild natural soap (such as Lithofin Wash Clean) to wash the floor surface without damaging it. This product is perfectly suited to blue stone tiles, whether for an outdoor terrace or an indoor floor.
- Protection after installation: apply a water and oil repellent as soon as the installation of the blue stone paving is finished. This treatment prevents the penetration of water, oil, or food stains, while respecting the chosen finish (aged (tumbled), sandblasted, sawn...).
- Annual outdoor maintenance: in spring, a deeper cleaning can be carried out with an anti-moss product or slightly bleached water. This removes traces left by winter, especially on shaded areas or around a pool. Be sure to rinse with clean water to preserve the finish of the stone.
⚠️ To avoid: acidic products, descalers or overly abrasive products (undiluted bleach, vinegar, hydrochloric acid…) that risk damaging the surface of the material, especially on bush-hammered or sandblasted finishes.
Thanks to its low absorption rate, blue stone is naturally water-resistant, frost-resistant and wear-resistant, making it an excellent choice for an outdoor terrace or paving around a pool.
The installation of bluestone outdoors must follow certain rules to guarantee a durable and attractive result:
- Prepare the ground with a stabilized sand bed or a concrete slab.
- Use a draining mortar or adjustable pedestals, depending on the type of substrate.
- Provide a slight slope for water drainage.
- Respect the expansion joints (5 to 10 mm).
- Apply a water-repellent treatment after installation to protect the surface.
Our teams support you with technical data sheets, installation advice, and the right maintenance products.
Yes, blue stone is a versatile natural material that combines harmoniously with many other materials to create modern, authentic or designer settings. Thanks to its blue-grey shades, its limestone texture and its various finishes, it allows great freedom of decorative composition, indoors as well as outdoors.
Here are some particularly successful material combinations:
- Blue stone and wood:
A blue stone terrace combined with wooden boards creates a warm and contemporary effect. This natural pairing is ideal for outdoor flooring, a pool surround, or a garden lounge area combining aesthetics and comfort.
- Blue stone and travertine:
Combining blue stone slabs and travertine tiles lets you play on the contrasts between the bluish grey and the beige tones. Perfect for an elegant Mediterranean atmosphere, particularly on a terrace, an exterior wall, or in a bathroom.
- Blue stone and stone- or concrete-effect porcelain stoneware:
For an urban or industrial decor, pairing blue stone with matt surfaces (concrete paving, cement tiles, slate wall) creates a graphic and structured look, very much on trend in modern architecture.
The price of blue stone paving varies according to several criteria: origin of the stone (Belgian, Vietnamese, Turkish…), thickness, finish, and format. At Minéral Pierre Naturelle, we offer a wide range of blue stone slabs in stock, with transparent and competitive prices.
For example:
- the OCEAN BLUE blue stone paving, sandblasted brushed finish in 2 cm thickness, is offered at €94.90/m² incl. VAT.
All our blue stone products are available in several tile formats, suited to your terrace, your indoor floor, or your pool surrounds. Regular promotions are available on certain thicknesses or finishes.
Our team supports you in choosing the material, technical details (installation, maintenance), and we offer delivery across France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. You can also read the customer reviews for each product to guide you in your decision.
Bluestone is often chosen for terraces, paths or pool surrounds because of its aesthetics and durability. But one question comes up regularly: does bluestone become slippery when wet?
The answer depends on several factors, but overall, bluestone is a safe and stable material, particularly when used outdoors. It has a dense and homogeneous structure, which limits water absorption. The less a stone absorbs moisture, the less prone it is to moss or slippery micro-organisms. This is one of the major advantages of bluestone, especially when it is laid in an environment exposed to the weather.
In wet conditions, the surface generally remains grippy, especially if the stone is well maintained and free of dirt. Indeed, the risk of slipperiness increases mainly when:
- the stone is not cleaned regularly,
- dead leaves, algae or moss accumulate,
- an unsuitable treatment has been applied (polish or glossing product).
This is why it is important to clean the surface regularly with clear water or a natural soap, and possibly to apply an anti-moss product in spring if the terrace is in the shade or close to dense vegetation.
Bluestone is also renowned for its behavior in frost: it does not crack, does not crumble, and retains its non-slip properties throughout the seasons. This makes it a reliable material, even in regions with harsh winters.
💡 Good to know: in sensitive areas such as pool surrounds, adding temporary non-slip mats or using stable furniture can enhance safety without affecting the aesthetics.
As blue stone is a dense limestone rock, it absorbs and stores heat, like most natural materials. However, unlike some very dark stones or synthetic materials, it does not become scorching hot to the touch. This depends mainly on the exposure, the color of the surrounding ground, and the air circulation.
In midsummer, a slab exposed due south can indeed be hot on the surface, but without reaching a level that is uncomfortable for walking barefoot. This is why blue stone is often used on:
- Outdoor terraces,
- Pool surrounds,
- Outdoor relaxation areas.
Its ability to release heat gradually also makes it an excellent thermal regulator: it absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly in the evening, which extends comfort on a terrace or under a pergola.
It is also important to note that the natural grey-blue hue of blue stone works in its favor. Unlike a deep black material or dark tiles, it does not excessively concentrate the sun’s rays, which limits heating.
For highly exposed areas, it may be wise to:
- Provide a few shaded areas (pergola, sails, parasol...),
- Lightly dampen the surface before use,
- Alternate with other, lighter materials around the terrace.
In short, yes, blue stone heats up in the sun, but in reasonable proportions that allow comfortable use even in summer. It remains a reliable and elegant choice for all your outdoor landscaping projects, combining durability, comfort and aesthetics.
