Kitchen with a zellige-effect splashback and Belgian bluestone floor in Saint-Avold

The project

In a family home in Saint-Avold, the owners were redoing their kitchen. They wanted a hard-wearing floor for daily traffic and a bright, easy-to-clean splashback.

The choices

They chose Belgian bluestone for the floor, for its blue-grey colour and density, and Snow gloss zellige-effect tiles for the splashback, whose irregularities catch the light.

Bluestone is a dense, wear-resistant limestone suitable for high-traffic rooms. The glazed ceramic of the splashback is unaffected by grease splashes and water.

Installation

A local tiler laid the floor and then the splashback in about ten days, before the units were fitted.

Indoors, natural stone is bonded to a dry, flat screed with an adhesive suited to stone (light-coloured for light stones). It is compatible with underfloor heating. A protective treatment is applied after laying.

The result

About 25 m² of bluestone floor and 4 m² of splashback: a bright kitchen with a hard-wearing floor.

Day to day, a limestone floor is cleaned with a pH-neutral soap; an anti-stain treatment, renewed according to use, preserves its appearance, especially in living areas and kitchens.
